ROULETTE TIPS

This is a short list of simple to remember, and easy to follow roulette tips. The fact is, there are no roulette tips that will make you a bundle, but there are some that may keep you from losing one.

Tip 1 - Never follow anybody's system. Even reputable names in the online gambling industry recommend you spread your bets around with a 'system' that makes no sense. Umm, ok let me just place the black and third column, so that if I win on one I will most likely lose the other. I'm sure they've convinced a million people to play though, because look at how few numbers could cause you to lose completely! That was sarcasm, subtle, but sarcasm. Spurious logic spouters, never listen to them.

Tip 2 - Look hard for a single zero roulette wheel. This will cut the house edge much more than any other option in the game of roulette.

Tip 3 - No matter how appealing a new and sexy bet might feel, never bet the five number bet, it has the worst odds on the table.

Tip 4 - Search for casinos that offer the surrender rule. This will cut the house edge almost as much as a single zero roulette wheel will, but only on even-money outside bets.

Tip 5 - No really, no systems.

Tip 6 - Don't spend your time looking for a biased roulette wheel. Although this may have been a valid methodology a couple of decades ago, any casino worth it's chandeliers checks it's own roulette wheels for biases.

Roulette strategy is in the betting; the players have absolutely no control over picking the winning number. The spinning of the wheel and the releasing of the ball are all done by a croupier (the house), the players only involvement is in making wagers. In roulette the house edge is the same for all possible bets. The only exception being the five-way bet on a double zero machine (1, 2, 3, 0, and 00) which gives the house a greater edge. So pick a number, or a group of numbers, and hope luck is on your side.

The only thing the player can do to improve his/her chances of winning is selecting a table that offers better odds. There are three different variations on the game of roulette; each offering the player different odds of winning, so when possible play the tables that offer the best odds for the player: The standard double-zero wheel is the most common in North America. This machine gives the house a 5.26% edge; it is the worst table for players to win on.

In Europe (and recently at some North American casinos) roulette is played on a wheel that contains only one zero. The single zero wheel reduces the house edge to 2.70% and offers the player better chances of winning. Some casinos offer both, which leads to the question 'considering the odds why would anyone play a double zero machine if a single zero machine is available?'.

In Europe they also have a variation called "en prison" that reduces the house edge to 1.35% and represents and even better chance for players. The "en prison" variation is offered when the zero is the winning number. Instead of the house claiming all of the money bet, the player has the option of losing half of the wager or leaving the wager and waiting for the outcome of the next play. If the player had originally bet on red to win and the next play results in a red number then the players money is returned to him (without the usual payoff).

These two European variations may explain why roulette is played much more in Europe than in North America - because they have better odds! Many online casinos will offer one or the other types of roulette regardless of their location, and some will offer both American and European roulette. Stick with the odds - European style.

The first thing you need to know about bets on a roulette table is that they all payout with the same house edge. To demonstrate this imagine you placed two chips on the 23,24 split, and your friend placed one chip straight up on 23 and one chip straight up on 24, you would both have an equal chance of winning but when one of the numbers comes up you would win 35 chips and your friend would win 34 chips BUT you only have one chip left on the table and your friend would have two chips left on the table. Both bets would return a total of 36 chips - this is the same for all chip positions on the table including the outside bets e.g. one chip placed on all red numbers (18 in total) would return the same as putting all eighteen chips on the even money red bet.

Single Zero Roulette Wheels
Tables using a single zero wheel have a total of 37 numbers, as your return from a single straight up bet is 36 (including your original bet) you can see that the casino takes a cut of 1 chip in 37:

Total percentage return is (36/37) * 100 = 97.2972973

Therefore the house edge is = 2.7027027

When the casino uses the en prison rule (even money bets are halved when zero is spun instead of being lost), the percentages are reduced as follows:

Total Percentage return is (36.5/37) * 100 = 98.6486486
Therefore the house edge is = 1.351351

Double Zero Roulette Wheels
Tables with double zero wheels have 38 numbers, as the payout is the same as a single zero wheel the casino takes a cut of 2 chips in 38:

Total percentage return is (36/38) * 100 = 94.736842
Therefore the house edge is = 5.263158
When the casino uses the en prison rule, the percentages are reduced as follows:
Total Percentage return is (37/38) * 100 = 97.368421
Therefore the house edge is = 2.631579
*The five number bet that covers 0, 00, 1, 2, 3 on a double zero wheel is the only bet that does not follow the rule that all bets return the same payout (it returns 35 chips not 36), the percentages for the five number bet are:
Total Percentage return is (35/38) * 100 = 92.105263
Therefore the house edge is = 7.8947368

Double zero wheels have a house edge that can quickly eat into your bank roll which is why roulette is not very popular in the USA (which uses mainly double zero's), and it should be avoided.

Single zero wheels have a fairly low house edge, which is why they are so popular in Europe, and with the inclusion of en prison they offer one of the best bets in the casino. Roulette is a fun game and it is rare to find a game offering such high odds (35-1 for a straight up) with such a low house edge - generally the higher the odds the higher the house edge (i.e. Keno, lotteries).
