Craps Etiquette
Craps Etiquette
Of all the games to play in a casino, craps probably has the most quirks of them all. Generally, the group of people who play craps are an extremely superstitious lot and, in my opinion, are not the most patient people in the world! With that in mind, I figured it would be best to have a small etiquette guide on this site to help beginners understand what they should and should not do at a craps table.
Know the Rules
It's best to know the rules before playing craps and that's why I created this site in the first place - to help beginners understand the rules of craps and some simple strategies. With that in mind, don't go to a crowded table with hardened craps player and expect the dealers to have time to help you learn the game. Many casinos have "learning/training" sessions at various times of the day to help beginners understand the game. Also, if a table is very empty, that usually can make for an easier environment to learn from a dealer or fellow player. Of course, using this site to understand the game of craps never hurt either!
"Hit the Back Wall Please!"
You might hear this every once in a while at a craps table: "Hit the Back Wall Please!". This would be a dealer telling the shooter to make sure that their throw hits the back wall and doesn't come up short. A throw that doesn't make it to the back wall looks weak and amateur while throws that go over the wall consistently look unprofessional. Again, everyone has a bad throw here and there so it's going to happen from time to time but just make an effort to hit the back wall and keep the dice in play.
Don't Aim for the Chips!
Dealers do not appreciate when a shooter consistently hits stacks of chips as they must restack those chips with the proper amounts. Also, many players are superstitious that hitting the chips will bring bad luck on that roll.
Care for a Free Cocktail?
Yes, free cocktails are one of the best things you can ask for in some casinos but one piece of advice: Don't put your drink on the table! There are drink shelves underneath every craps table to hold your drinks and dealers will insist you use those to store your drinks.
Tip the Dealers
As in most games, it is proper that you tip the dealers from time to time especially if you are doing extremely well. You may tip the dealers by simply saying "$x for the house" or you can actually play bets on the house for them like a pass line bet for the house. Dealers appreciate the pass line and come bets the most for their played tips as they know the odds are best on those bets.
Be Courteous
This is an obvious one but just be courteous to your fellow players. Make room for new players if there is room on the table. Give people some elbow room and help out new players whenever you can. Also, don't make a scene at people who are making dumb bets because many times they don't even know it. Instead, help them out by talking to them about the odds and how they will have a better advantage with other bets.
Another no-no is to rattle off "bad" numbers at the table. For example, don't yell "Come on 7!" when the point is already established. Chances are you might get a lot of glaring looks from people as crap players are very superstitious and do not like people doing things such as that.
